I came across this article a few days ago, thanks to Michelle Desilets from Orangutan Land Trust. I’d like to do (another) in depth post about palm oil, but in the meantime I’ll simply share this:
For those looking to avoid palm oil you should be looking for the following names, which are all oil palm based ingredients: palm kernel, palm kernel oil, palm fruit oil, palmate, palmitate, palm olein, stearate, palmitoyl tetrapeptide-3, sodium palm kernelate, hydrated palm glycerides, etyl palmitate, octyl palmitate, palmityl alchohol and about 20+ other names. This is not just in food. It’s in everything. As consumers we need to reduce consumption, absolutely, but boycotting everything made with palm oil is nearly impossible.
If the public continues to boycott (palm oil) just because a viral video told them to, instead of doing their own research and supporting those who are actively working toward a solution, companies will simply eliminate palm oil and move onto another oil based product that will cause an equal amount of destruction to critical habitat and endangered species.
The RSPO is not perfect but consumers should buy consciously, support those that are RSPO certified and only source palm oil by RSPO standards. If we do this, hopefully it’ll encourage other companies to follow suit.
